Why Green Bay Is the Best Watersports Spot in Cyprus (And We're Not Just Saying That)

I'll be honest with you. When people ask me why Green Bay is special, I always pause for a second. Not because I don't know the answer — but because there are almost too many answers, and I want to get it right.

I moved from the Austrian mountains to Cyprus twelve years ago. I had never planned to stay. And yet here I am, still waking up every morning and driving down to a small hidden cove between Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Bay, still genuinely excited to see who's going to walk through our (not existing) "door" today. That feeling hasn't changed. And I think that's the starting point for understanding what makes this place different.

It's Not Just a Watersports Centre. It's a Place.

Most watersports operations in Cyprus are set up on busy public beaches. You're surrounded by sunbeds, noise, strangers, and the general chaos of a tourist resort in summer. You do your 5-minute banana ride and that's it.

Green Bay is not that.

We're tucked into a small, protected cove that most people drive past without ever knowing it's there. The water is calm and clear because the bay naturally shelters it. There's almost no outside boat traffic. It's quiet in the way that actually lets you hear the sea. Regulars call it an insider's spot, and we've worked hard to keep it feeling that way — personal, unhurried, real.

When you come here, you're not a ticket number. You're someone we're genuinely happy to see.

The Activities Are Serious. So Are We.

Andreas — my partner and the heart of our small business — is one of the most technically qualified wakeboard coaches and boat drivers in general I've ever seen work. He was probably a fish in a previous life. Between his coaching, our instructors, and the equipment we've invested in over the years, we run a proper academy — not a beach toy rental.

Whether you're a complete beginner who's never been on a board, or someone who can already ride and wants to push their level, we have the setup, the knowledge, and the patience to make it happen. The same goes for wakesurfing, wakeskating, jetwskiing, wing foiling, and everything else we offer.

And then there's the turtle safari. Swimming alongside wild sea turtles in their natural environment, in the open Mediterranean, on a small speedboat with people who genuinely love the sea — it's the kind of experience that stops people in their tracks. We get messages about it months later. That never gets old.

Family-Run Means Something Here

I know "family-run" gets thrown around a lot. But for us it's literal — it's Andreas and me, a small team of people we trust completely, two boats we know inside and out, and a daughter who currently spends her summers running around the beach entertaining guests whether they asked for it or not.

And it doesn't stop there. Right next to us is a diving school run by Andreas's father, with two of his brothers working alongside him and their sister as part of the team too. So if you want to go deeper — literally — the expertise is right there, one family over. Then there's the food truck on site, where Andreas's mum takes care of everyone's hunger between sessions. It sounds almost too good to be true, but this is genuinely just one family's patch of coastline, shared with anyone who finds their way here.

That kind of setup means everything is connected. If you want to mix a morning boat trip or wakesurf session with an afternoon dive, we make it happen. If you want to grab something to eat between activities without leaving the bay, you don't have to. And when something goes wrong — which occasionally it does, because this is real life — there's always someone who cares enough to fix it properly.

That means when something goes wrong, we fix it. When someone has a special request, we actually think about it. When a guest is nervous about getting in the water, we take the time to make them feel safe — because we want them to have a great day, not because there's a script that says we should.

Why Cyprus? Why Here?

The Mediterranean is extraordinary. The water temperature, the visibility, the light in the afternoon & the colour of the sea — there's a reason people come back to Cyprus year after year. But the east coast, and Protaras specifically, has something extra. It's less crowded than the south, the sea is calmer, and it still feels like a place rather than a resort.

Green Bay sits right in the middle of all of that. Fourty minutes from Larnaka Airport, ten minutes from Fig Tree Bay, in a cove that genuinely feels like it was made for what we do.

We've been doing this for years now, and the thing that keeps us going isn't the bookings or the reviews — though we're grateful for both. It's the people who come back. The family that first visited seven summers ago and now brings their kids. The couple who got engaged on one of our boat trips. The solo traveller who came for a wakeboard lesson and stayed all day.

If you haven't been yet — come. The "door" is open, the water is warm, and we'll be there.

Green Bay Watersports & Wake Academy is located in Protaras, Cyprus, between Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Bay. You can find us, book activities, or just drop us a line at greenbaywake.com.
